Day 1 – Halifax

Day 2 – Halifax

Nova Scotia’s southern coastline is iconic and today we take in all its rugged beauty as we make our way to Peggy’s Cove. Here, take your own stab at photographing the famous white-and-red striped lighthouse that punctuates the rocky seascape. The area is very pretty and you might like to take a moment to perch on a nearby rock and breathe in the salty air, listen to the gulls overhead and watch the fishing boats bobbing on the waves. Back in Halifax this afternoon, you can enjoy the rest of the day to explore as you please.

Day 3 – Pictou – Sydney

We depart Halifax for Pictou, the ‘birthplace of New Scotland’. It was here in 1773 that the first Scottish settlers arrived in Nova Scotia on the ship Hector, a replica of which can be explored in the Heritage Quay. We move on, stopping in Port Hawksbury to view the Canso Causeway before arriving in St Peters on the beautiful Cape Breton Island. Here a stop will be made for light refreshments before we depart for Sydney.

Day 4 – Corner Brook

We leave Nova Scotia as we join the ferry service to Newfoundland and Labrador. On arrival we journey to Corner Brook and our hotel, situated at the mouth of the Humber River nestled between the Long Range Mountains and the open sea.

Day 5 – The Viking Trail – St Anthony

From Corner Brook we travel north along the Viking Trail, via Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the park is Tablelands, a barren ledge of rock over 80km in length that has been pushed up from deep beneath the ocean floor. We continue along the Viking Trail to our destination for the next two nights, St Anthony.

Day 6 – Iceberg Alley

We take to the ocean this morning for an exciting cruise in the scenic coastal waters off St Anthony – Iceberg Alley. The area is famous for its bounty of icebergs, whales, dolphins and seabirds (seasonally May-August). We then visit the Grenfell Mission, founded in the 1890s by Dr Wilfred Grenfell to provide medical services and care to the isolated people of northern Newfoundland and Labrador. This afternoon we make the short journey north to UNESCO-protected L’Anse aux Meadows, a 1,000-year-old Viking settlement with a pristine and unspoiled landscape.

Day 7 – Port au Choix – Rocky Harbour

This morning we travel to Port au Choix National Historic Site. The one constant denominator for all of the communities that have lived along the Viking Trail, is their dependence on the sea. At Port au Choix we’ll learn of the Maritime Archaic and Dorset peoples who lived here long before the Europeans had arrived. This afternoon we retrace our tracks along the Viking Trail to Rocky Harbour visiting the Torrent River Salmon Interpretation Centre and Fishway, to discover the story of Atlantic salmon and stop at Arches rock formation.

Day 8 – Gros Morne National Park

We’ll travel to the southern end of Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to visit the visitor centre and Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, including entrance to the interpretative exhibit. We stop at the Bonne Bay Marine station where you can experience a touch tank while learning about the amazing sea life of Bonne Bay and the latest research in marine ecology. We also enjoy an included boat cruise in the heart of the stunning Gros Morne National Park, a highlight of our Newfoundland holidays. We’ll witness some of the most overwhelming scenery in the park, so be sure to have your cameras ready.

Day 9 – Gros Morne National Park – Gander

We visit Gros Morne Discovery Centre this morning and learn all about the National Park and its story, before making our way to the town of Gander for two nights. The town is a lovely place to explore with a rich aviation history.

Day 10 – Gander

In World War II the town of Gander provided a major air link to Europe. It also played an important role on 9/11 when 7,000 passengers were stranded when North American airspace was closed. We visit the North Atlantic Aviation Museum with exhibits covering the period from 1935 to 2001, highlighting Gander’s role in the development of Trans-Atlantic aviation and onwards.

Day 11 – Terra Nova National Park – St John’s

Our journey this morning takes us through the Terra Nova National Park before the route continues to Bonavista where John Cabot is reputed to have landed in 1497 and where he first saw the ‘New found land’. Discover Bonavista’s lighthouse which dates from 1843 and has been restored, securing its status as a provincial historic site. We then join the ‘Discovery Trail’ and visit historic Trinity, a fascinating village with the many small buildings along its narrow streets having been restored and renovated. Our journey of scenic delights continues to the provincial capital, St John’s.

We have arranged a tour today that will include highlights of one of the oldest port cities in North America, including Cape Spear National Historic Site. Here you will stand at the most easterly point in North America, with stunning vistas and the open Atlantic Ocean. This afternoon is free.
